This month, Diane has a much simpler way for a plumber to score big money.

It’s scholarship season! To make your search a little easier, I’ve highlighted some awesome scholarship opportunities with upcoming deadlines in March 2014.

Good luck!

The DDC’s “Next Big Science Thinker” $5,000 College Merit Scholarship

Scholarship Deadline: March 1, 2014

This scholarship is almost solely based on your answer to a 500- to 800-word essay on the following topic: “Where do you think the study of DNA is going to be in the next five, ten and twenty years? How do you see yourself playing a role in this evolution?”

While you don’t have to be majoring in the sciences, you can tell by the prompt that some background in laboratory science, biological science, or medicine would be helpful.

However, since having a specific major is not a requirement, if you are not a science major but do have an opinion, feel free to apply! Additional requirements include:

  • Must be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States
  • Must be planning to enroll or  currently enrolled in an accredited university

The Nextstar Legacy Foundation Scholarship

Scholarship Deadline: March 14, 2014

This scholarship is for those who are planning to enter the plumbing, heating/ventilation/air conditioning/refrigeration (HVACR), or electrical profession.

If you follow the link above, you’ll see that there are two scholarships with a March 14 deadline: one for managers and one for technicians in the same fields. The two have slightly different eligibility requirements, so be sure to check the website to see which one you might qualify for.

The general eligibility requirements are as follows:

  • Must be planning to enter the plumbing, HVACR (heating/ventilation/air conditioning/ refrigeration), or electrical profession
  • Must be pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree program at a 4-year or 2-year college, university, or technical program
  • Must be a citizen of the United States, Australia, Canada, or the Cayman Islands

The Michael Yasick ADHD Scholarship

Scholarship Deadline: March 19, 2014

Because this scholarship is for students who have been diagnosed with ADHD, all applicants must provide proof of their diagnosis. This means that students who have self-diagnosed themselves as having ADHD will not be eligible. Other requirements include:

  • Must be a legal resident of the United States or District of Columbia
  • Must be accepted to or will be enrolled in an undergraduate program at an accredited college, university, vocational or trade school
  • Must be under the care of a licensed health care professional for ADHD. This does not mean that you must have any sort of ongoing plan of treatment, but just that you were diagnosed by a licensed health care provider with ADHD and are continuing to monitor your ADHD.

The Cognizant Making The Future Scholarship Program

Scholarship Deadline: March 31, 2014

This scholarship is for the “makers.” The Cognizant program defines “makers” as people who engage in hands-on projects to solve real-world problems. It’s all about innovation and creativity with this scholarship!

To apply, you must submit a video detailing: “A tangible product that typically brings about beneficial change or added value that also has a functional, whimsical, aesthetic, educational or therapeutic purpose.”

The product can be something you’ve made before for school or something you’ve been working on in your spare time.

This scholarship has a ton of specifications about the product and what is/isn’t allowed to be submitted. Interested students should ensure that they meet the eligibility requirements below and check out the scholarship website for more details.

  • Must be pursuing a career in a STEM (science/technology/engineering/mathematics) field
  • Must be a citizen or legal permanent resident of the United States
  • Must be eligible to enroll or currently enrolled at a 2- or 4-year accredited college, university, or a vocational-technical school
  • Must have a minimum 2.5 GPA
