When I first started paying off my debts, I didn’t bother explaining why I was doing it to anyone. With ubiquitous student loan debt and readily accessible consumer credit, being in The Red is normal.

My friends actually considered me weird for trying to get out of debt. The few times I tried to explain my thoughts to them, they met my rationale with discouraging sentiments. “Well, I just accept that I’ll always have some sort of debt.” “There’s no reason to make my small income even smaller with extra debt payments.”

Paying off debt is totally up to the individual that carries the balance, and that can make it a lonely endeavor. To avoid being discouraged, I kept to myself.…
