Happy (almost) Thanksgiving, SALT™ Blog readers!

To celebrate the holiday, we prepared a special dish for you: a brand new burning question! (Don’t worry: It’s only burnt on the outside; the answers are still delicious, we swear.)

And while turkey day presented many delicious directions to take, we kept things simple. Below, check out which financial accomplishment our bloggers are thankful for—and then post your own in the comments. After all, what’s Thanksgiving without sharing?…

Have You Ever Struggled With A “Job That Bites”?

This weekend, Nat Geo premieres a new show: Jobs That Bite. In it, “Jeremy Brandt sets off across the country to experience some of the wildest animal jobs America has to offer.”

Of course, this show takes its title literally—in that these animals actually bite. However, we asked our bloggers for a job they worked that figuratively “bit.” And while most of what they came up with is more glamorous than “sticking your arm up a cow’s butt” (well, except perhaps for farmer’s daughter Brigit), their choices do remind us of all the pit stops along the road of employment.…

The government shutdown has now hit double-digit days. Undeniably, the people most affected are the furloughed folk, unable to collect their wages. However, people missing shutdown services suffer too—just ask this kid.

So, we turned to our editorial team for our most thought-provoking burning question yet: Which expense of yours would you like to furlough, i.e., not have to pay for a little while?…

These Financial Decisions “Broke Bad” For Our Bloggers

Yup, it’s a second post today inspired by Breaking Bad. (Hey, this blog is located on the Internet after all, i.e., the epicenter for content about Walter White, cats, and when we’re lucky, both).

Our last post mined the show for some good financial lessons. However, in this final season, things have gotten very dark—so we must too for our latest burning question.…

What Good Money Advice Does “Breaking Bad” Offer?

This weekend, Breaking Bad wraps up its kinetic final season. These last episodes provided a lot of insight about what not to do with your money (don’t throw it out your car window; don’t bury it in the desert). However, there was a time when we found some good money lessons from Walt and Jesse. So, in honor of their final adventure, we’re removing the outlet plate from this blog—not to find a hidden ricin capsule, but rather, a favorite post from our archive.…

What Is Your Financial “X” Factor?

This week, The X Factor returned to Fox because, well, honestly we’re not sure. (Fox must really want something to show for the $95 million that they gave Simon Cowell.)

Honestly, we can’t wait for the show to go off the air so Simon can return to American Idol for a long overdue all-star season. (More Covais, please!) Still, that won’t stop us from finding inspiration from his current endeavor in the most superficial way possible—by looking at its title. …

Moving Costs, Doing Laundry, And Other Back-To-School Lessons

After a summer vacation, burning questions is back. Now, this column typically finds inspiration from pop culture. However, things are a little barren out there right now. Just look at new movie releases for this weekend: a One Direction documentary and Getaway, an action movie starring Ethan Hawke … and Selena Gomez? (At least that one could have a good soundtrack.)

Instead, we took to the calendar itself. Monday is Labor Day, and the holiday marks the end of summer, as well as one’s ability to wear white in public. However, it also means the beginning of the school year. So, we asked our bloggers for some 20/20 hindsight back-to-school anecdotes. (Sadly, none involved triple lindys.) Check out what they came up with.…

How Do You Stick To Your “To-Do List”?

Last week, The To Do List hit theaters. In the film, a very type-A young woman (Aubrey Plaza) writes down a list of things she wants to do before college so she can gain, well, um, experience.

This blog doesn’t cover the specific tasks she wants to accomplish (they’re beyond even our “college and beyond” mantra); however, the way she keeps herself accountable— namely, putting it on paper—definitely seems on point for a burning question. So, here it is: How do you stick to goals that you make for yourself (financial or otherwise)?

Check out what our bloggers had to say.…

Birthdays abound on the SALT™ Blog this week. Intern Carmen turned 22 (a happy belated!), while resident mom Sarah Barker got slightly older (writing here keeps you young, though … right?).

In addition, today marks the end of this blog’s 52nd week—meaning we’re officially 1 year old! Over the past year, we’re written more than 1,100 posts, received 1,300 comments, and used approximately 5,000 em dashes—that’s a lot of dashes!

To celebrate, this blog had just one thing on its birthday wish list: Stories from our bloggers about how to celebrate special occasions on the cheap. Check out what they came up with.…
