First off, I didn’t know what “krill oil” was when I found this scholarship. So, I did some research about krill, and this is what one looks like.
Krill oil comes from these little guys, and some people claim it helps with heart health. Go figure! While Viva Labs’s Krill Oil sponsors this scholarship, it actually has nothing to do with these tiny shrimp-like creatures.
I chose this award as the scholarship of the month because (a) almost anyone can apply and (b) it has a pretty simple essay requirement—so simple you could complete it before its July 5 deadline. (You have time off over the next few days anyway!)
To apply, all you have to do is submit a 500-1,000 word essay on one of the following topics:
- How has the importance of heart health impacted you, your family, or your community?
- How can an individual change his or her lifestyle to promote a healthy heart and holistic well-being?
You can approach this scholarship in a few different ways. First, if you have a family member who has struggled with heart health, then I’d simply write about that story and what you’ve learned from it. Second, if you haven’t had a personal experience with heart issues, I’d research interesting ways that individuals can keep their heart in good shape.
The first way tugs on the heartstrings, whereas the second can be witty, creative, and even informative. The company is going to post the winning essays on their site (read previous winners for a little inspiration here and here), so think about what kind of things other people would want to read.
