Today, we’re unveiling the SALT blog’s latest contributor: Diane Melville! Diane paid for her entire college education with scholarships—and she’s going to help you do the same. Keep reading to find out how.
You don’t know me, and I don’t know you. I want to start this relationship off on the right foot. No lies. No secrets. I’m going to be completely honest with you.
I have an agenda, and it’s a simple one: to get as many of you readers to apply for as many scholarships as possible.
Why not? There are literally thousands of organizations in the United States who solely exist to give away money to deserving students. All you have to do is fill out an application and write an essay. Now, that may sound like an over simplification… but sadly it isn’t.
It’s my job to convince you that applying for scholarships is going to be totally worth your time.
WHY SHOULD YOU LISTEN TO ME?
I’ve won more than enough money to pay for my entire college education. I’m talking 3 years at an epically expensive private college.
WHY DID I DO THAT?
When I was younger, my father was diagnosed with diabetes and had to have his leg amputated. Sadly, that meant that he could no longer work to provide for the family and the burden fell upon the shoulders of my brother and two sisters.
While my siblings skipped college to get jobs to support the family, I had my heart set on college. No one in my family had ever attended college, and I didn’t know the first thing about college applications or SAT tests, much less financial aid.
When I was in the 10th grade (and seriously debating giving up on college altogether), my high school counselor showed me a scholarship application and told me to give it a shot. I did and subsequently ended up winning $1,500/year for every year I was in college. One simple thought popped into my head:
“So…you’re telling me that all I have to do is keep filling out these applications… and I could just win money for college that I don’t have to pay back?”
Count me in! Yes, filling out more than 350 scholarship applications sucked, but graduating without a dime of college debt was definitely worth the effort. I can help you to do the same.
HOW CAN I HELP?
I’ve done all of the grunt work for you.
After mailing out hundreds of scholarship applications, I’ve learned a thing or two on how to be the most effective, impressive scholarship applicant on the planet. While there is no magical panacea that will instantly award you money (please feel free to let me know if you find such an item), I can promise you that, if you follow my advice and stick to it, you will win a scholarship.
You will win a scholarship.
Most people shy away from that statement. I’m not afraid to make that promise because the reality is…
- 60% of my readers won’t want to apply
- 25% of readers are probably parents (Howdy, parents!)
- 10% of readers will really want to apply, but will never get around to it
- 5% of you will do what I say and win a scholarship
- (Hopefully, some of you 10% will take this as a challenge and join the 5%)
The truth is it’s going to feel like a lot of work at first. It’s going to be hard to prioritize at times. I’m here to help. I’m here solely to help you win a scholarship. Think of me as your own private scholarship consultant!
If you have a question, just contact me. I’ll answer your questions and include it in an upcoming post. That way, everyone can benefit from what you ask.
I’m incredibly excited to have the opportunity to share what I’ve learned with all of you!
