Lego Movie Emmett

Like everything, this costume idea is “awesome.”

Halloween is the best when you’re a kid. A night out with all your friends when everyone wears funny clothes and there’s free candy everywhere? Yeah, that’s an 8-year-old’s dream.

But in college, the holiday gains a second wind. A campus full of goofiness and the perfect excuse to act like a child? Sounds pretty great (I bet there’s candy around too). The problem? Well, many college students aren’t necessarily known for planning ahead—and that can lead to spending a big chunk of change on a costume at your local Halloween store.

If you’re still looking for something to wear tomorrow, you came to the right place. Check out these cheap, last-minute ideas to give you the perfect ‘stume for any scenario.

For A Guy

What’s more topical than the main character from a hundred million dollar movie?

I already know what you’re thinking: Another superhero? Not this time, fellas.

No, I’m talking about Emmett from The Lego Movie. Combine some creative crafting and the brightest orange clothes you own, and you’ve got yourself a recognizable and fun look.

For A Girl

When it comes to a good costume, familiarity is key. You want everyone to immediately know and appreciate who you are. Some ideas are just too specific, while others lay in the perfect broad strokes of pop culture that everyone will catch.

For example, Miss America. Pop on your gaudiest dress (or for extra gaudy and a bit extra cash, head to your local thrift store), a sparkly tiara, extra make-up, and a homemade sash for a perfect look. To add a piece of local flavor, go with Miss Massachusetts or Miss Pennsylvania or whatever state you call home.

For A Group Of Guys

People love being patriotic. Wearing the stars and stripes and chanting U-S-A always gets the people going.

This year at Halloween, that perfectly ties into one of 2014’s biggest events.

Slap on all of your red, white, and blue, grab a soccer ball, and embrace your group’s costume as World Cup hooligans. You can sing and chant all night (but, please, no rioting).

I believe!

I believe that!

I believe that you have won!

For A Group Of Girls

If you’re anything like me, you’ve spent the last several weeks excited that autumn has arrived and CONSTANTLY SINGING TAYLOR SWIFT’S “SHAKE IT OFF.”

And, if that is the case, you’ve seen the music video too. It has about 200 million views and that number will continue to skyrocket.

If you’ve somehow avoided Taylor’s latest, the video features her in a variety of different outfits and styles. She ranges from hip-hop to ballet, but I’m confident that every group of girls could piece together all of Taylor Swift’s “Shake It Off” looks without spending more than a couple bucks. Borrowing and mismatching closet contents will turn your friends into a series of Swifts.

And if anyone doesn’t like your look? Just hit play and shake, shake, shake it off.
